Chapter Ten
“Thank you for agreeing to help, Francis.”
Sam shook Francis Iseman’s hand with a tension born of his relief. Francis had grown up in River’s Edge and as boys they were frequently in each other’s company. Years ago, Sam’s old friend had moved away and gotten a job with the Internal Revenue Service, but they still kept in touch through letters.
“I was surprised to get your telegram,” Francis told him. “My supervisor wasn’t keen on looking into the matter, but his opinion changed after I found some curious deposits.”
“Bank deposits?”
Francis threw his hat onto Sam’s desk and ran a hand through his short, dark hair. “Horsham has accounts at the Regional Bank of Great Plains. My father-in-law runs the place and I was able to pull a few strings.”
Sam couldn’t deny the anticipation making it difficult for him to stand still. Every hope he had of saving the Double O from foreclosure rested on his old friend’s findings. If his suspicions didn’t pan out, Sam didn’t know what he’d tell Opal.
She would be heartbroken at losing her family’s ranch, but Sam vowed to take care of her in all ways. He would marry her, bring her to River’s Edge and buy a house with a yard large enough for Eugene to romp around in. He had a backup plan, but he didn’t want Opal thinking he was trying to save her through a wedding. He needed her to marry him because she wanted to, not because she had to.
“Give me good news, Francis.”
The Revenue Agent hitched his hip onto the edge of Sam’s desk, and told him what he’d found. Twenty minutes and two reams of documents later, Sam gathered all the paperwork spread across his desk and smiled. It was time to set things right.
“The Board is meeting in the upstairs conference room,” Sam explained. “They should all be there already.”
Francis waved his hand. “Lead the way.”
Upstairs, the bank was even quieter than on the second floor, where Sam and his fellow records clerks and land auditors made no other noise beyond the shushing of shifting paper and the occasional thud of a stamp. While loud conversation often reigned on the ground floor where the tellers were located, the higher levels of the River’s Edge Bank and Loan were given to silence. The atmosphere was somber.
Sam paused on the landing at the top of the steps, his fingers curled around the door knob in preparation of stepping through into the conference room. He took a calming breath and stilled the nerves that shook in his torso. He wasn’t afraid of the Board of Trustees, but nervous of their reaction to his intrusion.
No matter. He would make them listen anyway. They had no choice but to hear him out, not with Francis Iseman possessing incriminating documents. Sam lifted his chin and opened the door.
Horsham’s voice filled the room. “We’ll move on the Double O as soon as the Supreme Court knocks down the Act.”
The bank’s president sat at the center of the long table, surrounded by ten older men.
